Recently the title for the seventh Harry Potter book was released on JKR's site. The title is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. This thread is for speculation about what the title means. I know that we've never even come close to guessing what titles mean before, but it's still fun to try. So, post your ideas here.
I say that it has something to do with Halloween. Since Halloween has always played an important part in the books, I'm guessing that the final battle will take place around then. That is when everything started and it would be a good place to end. If not, I think it means something interesting and deathly will happen on Halloween.

I just sort of shrugged, deciding that mentioning I was an atheist in front of my family wasn't a good idea. Actually, I think I said that it's probably some kind of rumor started by some religious person meant to degrade the Harry Potter books and deem them 'satanic'.

I guessed that the Half-Blood Prince was Snape before the book came out, but that was because the book of Advanced Potions was on the adult version's cover. Didn't know why he was Prince, though. lol
I'm not big on the Halloween idea. It sounds more like a hallowed place to me. And one of the alternate titles was Hogwarts Hallows, wasn't it?

Alicia, it does have something to do with religion. Hallows means to make or set apart as holy, according to dictionary.com. It can also mean to respect or honor greatly. Deathly means causing death or like death, also according to dictionary.com. I'm not big on the Halloween idea. It sounds more like a hallowed place to me. Deathly means causing death or like death, also according to dictionary.com. It doesn't only mean something to do with religion. I think it insinuates that when you honor something too greatly because it's powerful, only death and destruction can come out of it. But that's just me.

If the title isn't refering to Halloween (All Hallow's Eve), I can see it meaning people honoring something to the point where it becomes deadly. As in, people worship something blindly and start to kill for it. Not sure if that has much to do with the books. I've just been using the title, I'm not sure exactly what that could mean in the HP universe.
